Same tiny patch of Te Muna Valley as the Mason Rosé, but here the fruit goes into the wine the block was really planted for. It's a genuinely boutique setup, just 1,896 vines across six Pinot Noir clones on one hectare of land.
Being lower in the valley and closer to the river than the terraces around Martinborough town, the site runs noticeably cooler, so the fruit gets picked three to four weeks later than most and shows up as extra freshness and structure in the glass.
This one is a savoury, structured style of Pinot Noir rather than a fruity one. You've got red and dark cherry, a bit of herb and spice, and fine, grippy tannin from the extra hang time.
Everything from pruning to picking is done by hand by the Masons themselves, and there's very little of it made each year. A great little find!
